PP Narrows Gap with PSOE to 2.1 Points, Remains the Most Voted Party, Says CIS
The latest barometer from the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS) for January 2025 continues to position the PSOE as the leading party for the eighth consecutive month, with a projected voting intention of 31.8%. This figure marks a slight decrease of four-tenths from December's rating. Meanwhile, the PP has gained ground, now standing at 29.7%, effectively reducing the gap to just 2.1 points.
Vox maintains its status as the third-largest political force, climbing to 12.4%, while Sumar remains stagnant at 6.5%, alongside Podemos, which has seen a minor decline to 3.9%.
The survey was conducted in the early days of January, a period characterized by significant events, including corruption allegations involving PSOE members, the launch of commemorative activities for the anniversary of Francisco Franco's death, and preparations for Nicolás Maduro's inauguration in Venezuela, as reported by Europa Press.
Despite a slight drop from December, when the PSOE garnered 32.2% of support, the party remains a fraction above its performance in the 2023 general elections, where it received 31.7% of the votes.
Conversely, the PP, while still trailing behind its prior electoral support of 33.1%, has made notable gains since the last barometer, which recorded its backing at 28.4%. Should general elections occur now, Vox would maintain its previous support levels, while Sumar has seen a six-point decline over the past month. Podemos has also experienced a minor reduction, dropping from 4.1% in December to 3.9% in January.
Housing issues have remained the most pressing concern for Spaniards for the second month in a row, with mentions rising by six points to 28.3%. This figure reflects concerns similar to those observed in 2008, when the collapse of the housing bubble precipitated an economic crisis.
Following housing, the next most significant issues include the economic crisis at 22.1% and political problems at 22%. Immigration has also surfaced as a critical topic, registering 21.1% of mentions, marking an increase of seven points since December.
