Labor Calendar 2025: Public Holidays and Bridges by Autonomous Community

Tue 7th Jan, 2025

The year 2025 will feature a total of 14 non-recoverable, paid holidays across all autonomous communities in Spain, a standard practice in the country. Out of these holidays, 12 are recognized nationally and regionally, while the remaining two are local holidays set by individual municipalities. The Ministry of Labor published the official labor calendar for 2025 in the Official State Bulletin (BOE) in October, which included the 12 nationwide holidays. Subsequently, each autonomous community has approved its specific calendar, detailing its non-working days for the year.

Among the national holidays, nine are mandatory for all regions, including January 1st, April 18th (Good Friday), May 1st (Labor Day), August 15th (Assumption of Mary), October 12th (National Day), November 1st (All Saints' Day), December 6th (Constitution Day), December 8th (Immaculate Conception), and December 25th (Christmas). These can only be substituted by the communities if they fall on a Sunday, in which case they may be moved to the following Monday or replaced with another day of regional importance. In 2025, the National Day on October 12th will coincide with a Sunday, prompting regions like Andalusia, Aragón, Cantabria, and Extremadura to shift the holiday to Monday, October 13th, while others will select different holidays.

Additionally, three national holidays are optional: January 6th (Epiphany), April 17th (Holy Thursday), and either March 19th (St. Joseph) or July 25th (St. James). Autonomous communities have the discretion to adopt these as holidays or replace them with other significant dates.

This year, two national holidays will fall on a Saturday--November 1st (All Saints' Day) and December 6th (Constitution Day)--which means many workers will not enjoy these days off. Similarly, regions such as the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, and Galicia will observe their regional holidays (March 1st, May 31st, and May 17th, respectively) on Saturdays as well.

Furthermore, besides the Holy Week festivities on April 17th and 18th (Holy Thursday and Good Friday), 2025 will offer two extended weekends due to holidays falling on Mondays: January 6th (Epiphany) and December 8th (Immaculate Conception). Additional long weekends may arise from regional holidays that coincide with Fridays or Mondays.

Many regions will benefit from extended holiday periods of four to five days. For instance, the Balearic Islands, Navarra, the Basque Country, and La Rioja will enjoy a five-day holiday from April 17th to April 21st for Holy Week, while most other regions will have a four-day break by observing either Holy Thursday or the following Monday as a holiday.

The Community of Madrid will also experience a long weekend in May, as the region celebrates Labor Day on May 1st (Thursday) and the Community Day on May 2nd (Friday).
