Madrid Court Probes Controversial Tweets by YouTuber 'Mr. Jägger' Following Legal Complaint

Fri 3rd Jan, 2025

A court in Madrid has initiated proceedings against the YouTuber known as 'Mr. Jägger' after a complaint was filed by the legal group Abogados Cristianos regarding several of his tweets from 2015, which are alleged to promote hate speech. The controversial tweets reportedly include statements such as praising the imagery of a burning church and making jokes about nuns and abuse within the Church.

Currently, the court has not summoned Mr. Jägger for questioning but has requested Abogados Cristianos to provide specific details about the dates and content of the tweets they consider to be inciting hate.

Alberto Redondo, the man behind the 'Mr. Jägger' brand, boasts over a million subscribers on his YouTube channel, where he has been active for 12 years. Recently, he transitioned into mainstream media with a role at RTVE, working on a program hosted by Henar Álvarez on RTVE Play.

Following news of his involvement with the public broadcaster, Abogados Cristianos announced their intention to take him to court, citing various tweets from nearly a decade ago, some of which are still visible on his account.

The organization believes that many of these tweets violate laws against hate speech. Some examples of the contentious tweets include, "Nobody can deny the beauty of a church burning," and "Watching Star Wars to find its flaws is like abusing a baby to see where it bleeds." Additionally, a tweet jokingly asked, "What is black and cannot turn around in a hallway? A nun with a spear through her head."

The Madrid Court of Instruction No. 40 has opened an investigation into the matter without yet summoning Mr. Jägger. The judge has issued a formal request for Abogados Cristianos to clarify the specific tweets and their respective dates. In a ruling dated December 31, the judge noted that the allegations possess characteristics that suggest a potential criminal infraction, emphasizing the need for further investigation to determine the nature and circumstances of the alleged acts and the individuals involved.

Recently, Abogados Cristianos, along with the group HazteOir, has initiated legal action against other RTVE collaborators for offenses related to religious sentiment. This includes claims against television presenters David Broncano and Lalachus for a New Year's Eve segment that featured a parody of a virgin depicted as a character from a popular game show.

Polonia Castellanos, president of Abogados Cristianos, has accused RTVE of misusing public funds to target Christians and divert attention from various corruption scandals surrounding the government. She also criticized the current administration under Sánchez for its plans to abolish laws protecting religious sentiments, claiming this would enable unchecked attacks on Christian beliefs.
