Claudia Sheinbaum Proposes 'Mexican America' in Response to Trump

Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico, has responded to the recent suggestion made by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America.' In a press conference, Sheinbaum proposed an alternative, suggesting that the regions of the United States and Mexico be referred to as 'Mexican America.' This proposition is rooted in historical references, citing a foundational document from 1814 that labeled the territory in such a manner.

Sheinbaum emphasized the historical significance of the name, noting that the Gulf of Mexico has been recognized by this name since 1607, and expressed hope that her proposal would resonate positively.

Trump, who is set to begin his second term on January 20, had previously stated that renaming the Gulf would be fitting and criticized Mexico for allowing a significant influx of migrants into the United States. In his remarks, he accused the Mexican government of being under the influence of drug cartels, to which Sheinbaum firmly countered that the Mexican populace is in charge of its own affairs.
