At least three Lebanese displaced individuals have lost their lives and more than 30 others have sustained injuries following gunfire from Israeli forces. This incident occurred as they attempted to return to their hometowns in southern Lebanon, after a ceasefire agreement expired, which mandated Israel's withdrawal from the territory.
The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported that the Israeli attacks targeted citizens trying to re-enter their villages, resulting in fatalities in areas such as Houla, Blida, and Aitaroun. Multiple injuries were reported across various locations as displaced groups gathered at the entrances of their villages early Sunday morning, hoping to assess damage to their homes after the ceasefire agreement, which allowed Israel 60 days to complete its withdrawal, reached its deadline at midnight.
Despite the agreement, the Israeli government announced on Friday that it would not withdraw its forces from Lebanon in time, citing delays from the other party in fulfilling their obligations under the accord. The agreement also called for the withdrawal of the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah from the border area and its replacement with a more substantial presence of the Lebanese Army.
According to the National News Agency (ANN), the incident in Kfar Kila occurred after the victims crossed a barrier and checkpoint established by what has been termed the 'occupying army.' Numerous gatherings of displaced individuals were reported in the central and western sectors of the border region.
While Israel has withdrawn from most of the eastern sector, it continues to maintain a presence at various points in the western sector. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has been in contact with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, aiming to extend the ceasefire beyond Sunday, although neither party has made an official statement regarding an extension of the terms.
