Spanish Authorities Investigate Possible Kidnapping of Tourist in Algeria

Thu 16th Jan, 2025

The Spanish government is currently looking into the potential kidnapping of a Spanish tourist in southern Algeria, reported multiple sources. Preliminary information suggests that the abductors may be affiliated with the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS), according to the regional portal 'Actualités Brûlantes du Sahel'. This group has been active in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, and has been responsible for numerous attacks in recent years.

Reports indicate that the companions of the female tourist were released at the Algerian border prior to entering Mali. This incident marks a continuation of the troubling trend of kidnappings in the region.

Just a few days earlier, on January 12, an Austrian national, Eva Grezmatcher, was reportedly abducted in Agadez, Niger, where she had been residing for over two decades. This incident was noted as the first kidnapping of a European citizen in Niger since a military junta took power in 2023, as stated by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The increase in kidnappings in this area raises significant concerns regarding the safety of foreign nationals, particularly in regions where extremist groups operate. The Spanish government is working closely with local authorities to gather more information and ensure the safety of its citizens abroad.
