Monster Energy Surpasses Red Bull in Spanish Market Share

Sat 4th Jan, 2025

In the competitive landscape of energy drinks in Spain, Monster Energy has emerged as a clear leader, surpassing its long-time rival Red Bull. As of the end of 2023, Monster has achieved a significant market share of 39.5% in the food and impulse channel, which includes supermarkets and similar retail outlets. This marks the highest share in its history, according to annual financial reports filed by Red Bull.

In contrast, Red Bull's market share stood at 33.5%, reflecting a six-point deficit compared to Monster, which is the largest gap since Monster first overtook Red Bull in 2021. The trend of increasing dominance by Monster was anticipated, as Red Bull had previously commanded 37% of the market in 2020, while Monster was at 34.1% during the same period. Over the following years, Red Bull has seen a decline of 3.5 percentage points, while Monster has consistently increased its share, moving from 37% in 2021 to 39.5% in 2023.

The energy drink category saw overall sales volume grow by 8.6% in 2023, while the broader beverage sector only saw a modest 0.3% growth. The energy drink segment's value increased by 17.4% year-over-year, largely attributed to price hikes from manufacturers. Notably, the growth was even more pronounced in the food retail channel, where it approached 20%.

While Monster is making significant strides in retail, Red Bull maintains a stronghold in the hospitality sector, where it captured a market share of 64.3% in 2023. However, this figure has also seen a decline from 71.5% in 2022 and 74.2% in 2021.

Monster's strategic importance to Coca-Cola cannot be overstated. Although Coca-Cola does not fully own Monster, it holds approximately 20% of Monster Beverage Corporation, which is publicly traded with a market valuation exceeding $50 billion. These investments are crucial for Coca-Cola's energy drink strategy, as Monster accounts for about 13% of Coca-Cola Europacific Partners' annual sales.

The performance of Coca-Cola Europacific Partners in Spain reflects the rising popularity of energy drinks, with sales increasing by 14% in 2023, while traditional Coca-Cola products saw stagnant growth. This positive trend continued into 2024, with a 4.5% growth in energy drink sales reported in the third quarter.

Red Bull reported a revenue of EUR151.7 million in Spain for 2023, a 10% increase from the previous year, which the company attributes to price adjustments amidst inflationary pressures. The majority of Red Bull's revenue is concentrated in four autonomous communities: Catalonia, Andalusia, the Community of Madrid, and Castilla-La Mancha.

Red Bull's marketing strategy remains a cornerstone of its operations. In 2023, the company increased its spending on advertising and public relations to EUR48.4 million, representing almost 10% growth in this area and accounting for one-third of its operating expenses.
