Internal Conflict Erupts in Jenin Between Palestinian Authority Forces and Militia Alliances
The city of Jenin, located in northern West Bank, is witnessing escalating tensions as clashes break out between the Palestinian Authority (PA) forces and various armed groups. Residents of the Jenin refugee camp, home to approximately 23,000 individuals, are increasingly concerned about security as violence intensifies.
The Jenin camp was established in 1948 following the Nakba, a term used to describe the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the creation of Israel. Over the years, the refugee population has grown significantly, with nearly six million Palestinians displaced since then. Currently, the area is reportedly littered with around 150 landmines, according to the PA.
Since the outbreak of violence on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched attacks resulting in significant Israeli casualties, Israeli forces have been conducting operations in Jenin that have led to numerous deaths and arrests. However, the current conflict is mainly between Palestinian factions.
On December 15, 2023, the PA initiated efforts to disarm what they describe as "outlawed" groups operating within the region. This campaign has resulted in casualties on both sides, including the deaths of six PA soldiers, four militants, and three civilians. Among the victims was Shaza al Sabbagh, a 21-year-old journalism student known for her activism, who was fatally shot while out with her mother. The circumstances surrounding her death remain contentious, with no party claiming responsibility.
A militant leader from the camp, who identified himself as Quais, stated that he is affiliated with Hamas but emphasized the unity among various factions against the PA. He expressed frustration over the PA's collaboration with Israel to suppress resistance efforts in the occupied territories. According to Quais, the PA's actions are motivated by external pressures, including threats from Israel regarding potential control over Gaza.
In a contrasting perspective, General Anuar Rajab, a spokesperson for the PA's intelligence services, argued that Israel aims to weaken the Palestinian Authority by fostering unrest among these militias, some of which are allegedly receiving funding from Iran. He criticized the militants for endangering civilians by deploying landmines and misusing healthcare facilities for military purposes.
The ongoing conflict has led to heightened scrutiny of media coverage. The PA has prohibited Al Jazeera from broadcasting in the region, accusing the network of inciting dissent. However, militants in Jenin have welcomed media attention, citing its role in highlighting their struggle. Rajab, however, contended that these groups are attempting to distort the narrative regarding the Palestinian cause.
Despite the PA's efforts to regain control, tensions remain high as armed groups continue to challenge their authority. Residents express frustration over the lack of basic services and the presence of PA forces, with many calling for an end to the ongoing violence.
In a poignant moment, Um Mutasim al Sabbagh, the mother of the slain journalist, recounted the tragic circumstances of her daughter's death, expressing her anguish over the loss. As the conflict continues to unfold, the situation in Jenin remains precarious, with the potential for further escalation.
