The Spanish government has announced the successful liberation of a citizen who had been held captive in North Africa. According to sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the individual, who was reportedly detained against his will, is now free. The ministry emphasized that Spanish diplomatic and intelligence services worked closely with local authorities to ensure a swift and positive resolution to the situation.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a prominent Tuareg separatist group operating in northern Mali, declared that they had handed over the Spanish national to Algerian authorities. This announcement followed the individual's abduction the previous week in southern Algeria. The FLA's spokesperson, Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, stated that their security unit successfully secured the release of the hostage, who had been taken on January 14 and subsequently moved to northern Mali.
Ramadane noted that the release was facilitated by negotiations involving "well-meaning intermediaries" with the captors, whom the FLA described as part of a criminal network operating across the Sahel region and beyond.
The released individual has been identified as Navarro Giane Gilbert and is reported to be in good health. He managed to make contact with his family prior to being handed over to Algerian authorities, who remained in communication throughout the operation, given that the kidnapping occurred within their territory.
The FLA accompanied their announcement with a photograph of the freed Spanish national. In the image, he is seen sitting on a camping chair, surrounded by armed members of the FLA, alongside a pickup vehicle displaying the flag of Azawad, which represents the Tuareg aspirations for an independent state.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges related to security and abduction risks in the Sahel region, which has been grappling with the influence of various militant and criminal groups. The Spanish government's successful coordination with regional partners underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing such threats.
