Haar Disciples sting Hornets; Caribes widen lead
The Haar Disciples kept on rolling in the 1. Bundesliga South baseball league over the weekend, stinging the last-place Bad Homburg Hornets twice with 7-3 and 9-6 victories. Haar's season record now stands at 10-4, tightening their hold on fourth place, a post-season playoff spot in the Bundesliga South.
In game one away at the sixth-place Hornets, pitcher Lukas Steinlein capped an impressive week when he was named in Germany's national squad for a tournament in Prague. Steinlein picked up his third win of the season, helped by a Haar offense which included a pair of home runs by Tony Younis. Steinlein was also good at bat, getting two hits, as did newly-acquired outfielder Cedric Bassel.
In the second game, Haar raced away to post an 8-2 lead by the fourth inning, with one of the highlights in the scoring attack being a double by Bassel and a solo home run by Joshua Petersen. Later on, Haar's Michael Stephan also hit a home run.
The Disciples' American hurler Brian Fields pitched the full nine innings - throwing a jaw-dropping 187 pitches in the process. He struck out 12 Hornets while giving up eight hits and three earned runs. Control problems also resulted in giving up four walks.
The Munich area's two 2. Bundesliga-South teams had a bad, if not to say disastrous weekend, losing by some embarrassing scores. The Haar Disciples' second team, playing away at the Neuenburg Atomics, were annihilated 35-2 in the first game, and then shut out 6-0 in game two. Haar's season record now stands at 1-12, the worst in the 7-team league.
Local rivals Baldham Boars didn't fare any better away at the Mainz Athletics second team. The visitors got clobbered 21-6 before losing a close one 6-5 in the second game. Baldham, newly-promoted to the 2nd league after a four-year absence, are in fourth place with a 4-5 record.
In the Regionalliga South East (German baseball's 3rd division), the Munich Caribes continued their domination but got a bad break with the weather. Leading the league, the Caribes hosted second-place Füssen Royal Bavarians and soundly won the first game 9-1. The hosts were also leading 7-2 in the second game and were threatening to score even more when the rains came.
After a 90-minute rain interruption and no sign of it slowing, the umpires declared a rainout, meaning the game will have to be replayed all over again at a later date.
The first-game win boosted the Caribes' record to 13-2. With four of the six remaining season fixtures on their home turf at the Olympiapark's Oberwiesenfeld baseball park, the Caribes are in a commanding position to win the Regionalliga, as their closest challengers, the Royal Bavarians, are only 8-5.
The Caribes are now openly declaring their aim to win the Regionalliga title, while keeping their options open about whether or not promotion is their best option.
